Bio:

“They took my home and family from me, so now I shall make the whole of the world my home, and all those in need of a protector shall be my family…”

Humble Beginning

Magnus is a simple cleric of Avandra who was born and grew up in the Harkenwold. He was apprenticed to the church as a young boy by parents of little means who had two older children already, and one of those a daughter who would require at least something of a dowry before too long. Magnus was a good student, though undistinguished in his career until shortly after his ordainment when he found himself at the center of a minor scandal that saw him banished to a small unnamed village several miles northeast of the Harkenwold.

Magnus spent 6 years ministering to the folk of the village, building a hard but good life. A fairly large man of human descent, he mastered the art of taking care of his own needs and kept himself strong and fit by building a respectable chapel to Avandra over the years. The folk of the village, some 30-40 souls in all, did a small bit of business with the Dwarves of Hammerfast, and his participation in these activities led Magnus to pick up a fair knowledge of the Dwarven tongue and writings.

Torn Asunder

Life continued thus for half a decade and more until one day in early summer he went into the forest to the southwest of the village to do some trapping. After two nights in the forest harvesting its bounty and communing with Avandra, he made his way back to the village, only to find it in ruins. Fewer than ten souls were left after a raiding party swept down from the Dawnforge Mountains to kill whomever they found. Many homes were burned, and the near-finished chapel had been torn down with seemingly joyful abandon and singularity of purpose. After a few brutal hours, the raiding party turned heel and rode back into the mountains.

The well-grounded folk of the village are not the sort to make up fanciful stories, but it must be remembered that the incident happened in the quiet of a clouded night, so the stories of the raiders’ exotic appearance and decidedly non-human nature must be taken with a pinch of salt.

In the aftermath, the village was abandoned by the survivors, who gathered what belongings they could and made their way to the Harkenwold. Magnus, wracked with guilt at not being there to stand up for his people, chopped the remains of his chapel to burnwood. Years of devoted effort reduced to a sacred pyre for the fallen.

Toward the Future

His rift with the church would keep him from settling in the Harkenwold, and so Magnus set out for Hammerfast. Inquiries there and along the way revealed no knowledge of the raid nor who might have been behind it. After a week of fasting and prayers to Avandra for strength and purpose, Magnus purchased a weapon and supplies. Not finding a suit of human-sized mail for sale or barter, he set off for the town of Fallcrest to fill this gap in his preparations.

Magnus was fully determined now to make his own way through the world…was he seeking knowledge and vengeance against those who had destroyed his home…aiming to prove his worth to the church elders who had spurned him…trying to atone for his failure to protect those who had become his family in their time of need? Magnus himself had no answers on this night. But as the town hove into view among the Moon Hills, he was certain that his story would be written as it unfolded and had the sense that its conclusion would happen far from these backwater hills where it had started…

Appearance and Demeanor

Magnus dresses simply and eschews bright colors. He favors mace class weapons and chain mail and carries a holy symbol on which are inscribed the names of all those who died in the raid on his village. He had this symbol carved from the wood of his chapel/pyre by one of the artisans of Hammerfast before starting his journey.

Magnus is quick to join any fray in protection of his friends. He will always stand up for the weak and oppressed and is often the first into a fight, though he is no fool and will step back to leave any heavy fighting to those best equipped to handle it. A quiet man, he does not suffer fools or foolish actions well, but for those he respects, his sense of humor is warm and sharp. He is generally optimistic, but not so much that he neglects to plan ahead…Magnus firmly believes that Avandra smiles on he who would make his own good luck.
